What is silicon dioxide? Is it a harmful substance?
Silicon dioxide is a naturally occurring mineral commonly found in the earth’s crust, usually in quartz and various organisms. In nature, plants also contain silicon dioxide. It is common for water to contain silicon dioxide. Thus, the life of mankind is closely linked to silicon dioxide.

The American Journal of Epidemiology published the results of a 15-year follow-up study, which found that higher silicon dioxide levels in water help reduce the risk of dementia. The research indicated that adding a daily 10 mg dose of silicon dioxide to drinking water reduced dementia risk by 11%. Therefore, ingesting silicon dioxide is basically harmless.

Silicon dioxide has long been used in cake flour, seasoning powder, and coffee creamer as an anti-caking agent, in beer and wine as a clarifying agent, and often in many vitamin and supplement products in capsule and tablet forms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies silicon dioxide as a food additive permitted for direct addition to food for human consumption. The amount of silicon dioxide used as an anti-caking agent is very small.

Why do many products contain maltodextrin? Is maltodextrin safe?
Maltodextrin is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Maltodextrin is a colorless and odorless starch that dissolves easily in water and is used as a filler in many food and beverage products.
Maltodextrin is also commonly used in various manufacturing processes, including spray-drying. In spray-drying, plant ingredients are first concentrated into liquids. These liquids are dried by spraying them onto maltodextrin powder. Without the maltodextrin powder, the liquids would leave nothing behind after evaporation. Hence maltodextrin is added to ingredient concentrates to obtain homogeneous, fine powder.

What are phytoestrogens?
Phytoestrogens are found in virtually all plants, especially beans, vegetables, and nuts. These include soybeans, mung beans, winter melon, broccoli, cabbage, apple, sesame seeds, pistachios, sunflower seeds, chestnuts, almonds, walnuts, and cashew nuts. Phytoestrogens are different from animal-based estrogens. They are natural phytochemicals. Saponins are a major group of phytoestrogens. They are found in many plant foods, including soybeans and spinach. Different phytoestrogens bring the body different benefits.

Will phytoestrogens cause cancer?
No. In fact, they prevent cancer. Research has shown that phytoestrogens fill receptor sites in the body, keeping cancer-causing animal-based estrogens from getting there first. This, in turn, helps to prevent hormone-related cancers (such as breast cancer).

Is it true that fructose promotes cancer cell growth and is not suitable for cancer patients? If so, isn’t cane sugar a better option?
Fructose is a simple sugar that occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, fruit and vegetable juices, and honey. It is also widely used as a sweetener in foods and beverages. When fructose is joined to glucose, sucrose is formed. Sucrose, often referred to as cane sugar, is commonly found in sugar cane, sugar beets, corn, and other plants.
All cells in the body use sugar as an energy source, and this includes both healthy and cancer cells. Sugar is needed by the body to form DNA, which is composed of long chains of deoxyribose sugar. The digestive system also breaks down complex carbohydrates in grains and vegetables into simple sugars, which the cells use as a source of energy.
Eliminating all sugar from a cancer patient’s diet harms healthy cells that need energy to function. Also, according to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, there is no conclusive research on human subjects to prove that sugar makes cancer cells grow and spread.
Eating sugar does not necessarily lead to cancer. However, excessive calories from sugar lead to a bigger waistline, which can lead to an increased cancer risk over time.
Experts recommend eating a balanced, plant-based diet and limiting the amount of sugar and calories in one’s diet.
